An Adventure in the Lion Kingdom
A sprawling National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Gir is the only home & sanctuary for the majestic Asiatic Lions. These erstwhile private hunting grounds of Junagarh royalty now attract visitors in droves who come here to watch the Asiatic lion in action.
Come along for a thrilling escapade in the lion country that echoes with the roars of the mighty czar of the jungles. Hop on a Jeep and get going in the wilderness for a date with the regent of the forest.
The terrain here is rugged with flat grasslands and gently rolling hills & hillocks, making it a perfect lion country. Several rivers run through the sanctuary fulfilling water requirements for its dry deciduous vegetation.
The Asiatic Lion, once at the verge of extinction, thrives in the forests of Gir and is the uncontested king of Gir. However, Gir also has a flourishing population of leopards, wild boar, striped hyena, antelopes, pangolins, and spotted jungle cats. The riverine areas in the park are breeding grounds for marshy crocodiles.

Gir's mighty lions have somewhat overshadowed the flourishing birdlife in the park. However, Sasan Gir is home to over 300 species of the avifauna genus. Get your binoculars and check out the wilderness for white-backed & long-billed vultures, crested serpent eagles, pelicans, painted storks, whistling thrush, paradise flycatcher, and various waterfowls.
The park is divided into seven safari zones and is accessible only through a valid safari permit that allows for a Jeep Safari or a Canter Safari along with a certified guide. Get your permissions, hop aboard a jeep, and with some luck, you are sure to sight a majestic lion bounding through the dense jungles.
Located within the sanctuary, this enclosed area, also known as the Devaliya Safari Park, offers a close experience of the Gir forest. Devaliya zone is open round-the-year and promises you an opportunity to view wildlife in a fenced area.
The park is open to the public from mid-October to mid-June. However, the peak tourist season in Gir is from November to February when the weather is cool & pleasant. But summer months from March to May, though hot & uncomfortable, are great for spotting lions as the animals venture more to the watering holes.
By Air- Diu Airport, located at a distance of around 65kms, is the nearest airport.
By Rail- Veraval Railway Station (72kms) and Junagarh railhead (80kms) are the closest railway stations, connecting Sasan Gir to the rest of India.
By Road- A network of well-developed roads & highways connect Gir National Park to the major cities in the area.
