Major Attractions of Agra
Although Taj Mahal steals the show in Agra, its other Mughal-era monuments are equally majestic. Join us as we explore the beautiful City of Taj and discover its many majestic monuments.
Taj Mahal
A monument of love chiseled in white marble, the Taj Mahal depicts the eternal adoration of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Standing gracefully on the banks of Yamuna, this magnificent complex of arched gateways, sky-high minarets, Persian gardens, and channeled waterways is a picture of elegance. Its exquisite interiors are a marvel of delicate engravings inlaid with precious stones. Built almost 400 years ago this last home of Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife has retained its romantic aura and dreamy charm for the lovers across the world.
Agra Fort
This magnificent double-walled structure in sandstone, built by Emperor Akbar, stands tall as a silent sentinel of the glorious Mughal Empire in India. It was built predominantly as a defense structure, but Emperor Shah Jahan transformed it with marble embellishments and splendid palaces & mosques. The fort, however, became Shah Jahan’s gilded prison after his son Aurangzeb usurped the Mughal Empire.
Fatehpur Sikri
This imperial city, built by Emperor Akbar, was once a short-lived capital of the Mughal Empire. This sprawling city in red sandstone with its magnificent palaces, aesthetic mosques, splendid Buland Darwaza, and exquisite bridges over the tank is a sublime blend of Islamic, Gujarati & Rajasthani architectural styles. The city, however, was deserted in less than 15 years due to acute water scarcity in the area but its fortified battlements still stand tall as an epitome of Mughal grandeur.
Sikandra- Fort & the Tomb
The final resting place of Emperor Akbar, Sikandra is a marvelous edifice carved in marble & red sandstone. Commissioned by Emperor Akbar and finally completed by his son Jahangir, this rectangular structure without a dome is a departure from the typical Islamic architecture. Exquisite lattice screens, arched gateways, delicate minarets, and lush Persian-styled gardens, are the insignia of Sikandra.
