Often known as the birthplace of Buddhism, Sarnath holds the distinction of being the venue of the lord Buddha’s first sermon after achieving enlightenment. In 389 BC King Ashoka visited here and marked this site with stupas and monasteries, enhancing its position as a Buddhist pilgrimage. However, Buddhism went into decline during the Mughal invasion in the 12th century and Sarnath completely disappeared, only to be rediscovered by British archeologists in the 19th century.
Located just a few kilometers from Varanasi; Sarnath takes you away from the hustle-bustle of the city of Ganges to the serenity of ancient ruins. Let’s take a quick tour of this tranquil destination on the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit in India.
