This temple, also known as ISKCON temple, is an epitome of beauty and serenity. Located on the outskirts of Vrindavan and embellished in white marble, the temple is much sought-after by Krishna devotees.
The legend goes that Lord Krishna was born in a prison under the oppressive rule of his uncle Kansa. This prison-like temple, guarded by two gatekeepers, is believed to be built at the site of Lord Krishna’s birth.
This imperial city, built by Emperor Akbar, was once a short-lived capital of the Mughal Empire. This sprawling city in red sandstone with its magnificent palaces, aesthetic mosques, splendid Buland Darwaza, and exquisite bridges over the tank is a sublime blend of Islamic, Gujarati & Rajasthani architectural styles. The city, however, was deserted in less than 15 years due to acute water scarcity in the area but its fortified battlements still stand tall as an epitome of Mughal grandeur.
A beautiful structure, built in Rajasthani style of architecture, Dwarkadhish temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna as the king of Dwarka. A black idol of Lord Krishna accompanied by his consort Radha, resides in the sanctum. Holi and Janamshtmi are the most celebrated festivals here.
One of the most popular Vaishnavite shrine in the country, this temple le is home to a black idol of Lord Krishna believed to be given to Swami Haridas by the lord himself. Banke translates to ‘bent in three places’ and ‘bihari’ means ‘enjoyer’. This refers to the posture of lord Krishna and his inherent character as one who seeks pleasure in various forms.
Being a sacred city, restaurants here mainly serve simple vegetarian fare. However, Mathura’s delicious sweet ‘Pede’ are sure to sweeten your taste buds.
The pleasant weather in winters, from October to March, is the best time to visit here. Don’t miss the Holi celebrations here in the month of March.
By Air: Agra Airport is the nearest airport to reach Mathura & Vrindavan.
By Rail: Mathura Junction, around 14kms from Vrindavan, connects the twin cities to the other cities in the region.
By Road: A good network of roads & highways connect Mathura-Vrindavan to the other Indian cities.
