Alluring Attractions of Kaziranga National Park
Come along for an exciting escapade to this rhino-land of India, where we track the one-horned beast and soak in the thrill of an exhilarating safari.
Topography and Vegetation
Extending over an area of around 430sqkm and bordered by rivers Brahmaputra & Mora Diphu, Kaziranga lies in the flood plains of River Brahmaputra. Its undulated topography consists of flat grasslands, exposed sandbars, flood-formed lakes, and elevated regions, both natural & artificial, called chapories that offer protection & refuge to the animals during floods. Thick evergreen & semi-evergreen forests of the eastern Himalayas and tall grasses like sugarcanes, spear & elephant grass form the vegetation cover in Kaziranga.
Mammals and Other Species
Kaziranga is the domain of the one-horned rhino with its numbers teeming over 2400. However, besides the rhino population, the park is much known for its Big Five that also include tiger, elephant, swamp deer, and wild buffalo. In fact, due to the growing population of tigers in Kaziranga, it was also designated a Tiger Reserve in 2006. Other animals inhabiting the park include jungle cat, fishing cat, rare hispid hare, Indian gray mongoose, Bengal Fox, Golden Jackal, Sloth Bear, Chinese Pangolin, and flying squirrels.
Birds of Kaziranga
Kaziranga has a large avian population, both resident & migratory, and has thus been declared an ‘Important Bird Area’ by Birdlife International. White-fronted goose, ferruginous duck, Baer's pochard duck, lesser & greater adjutant, black-necked stork, and Asian stork migrate from faraway lands to spend their winters in Kaziranga. The area is also home to various species of hornbills, vultures, weaver birds, thrushes, waterfowls, and warblers.
Wildlife Safari in Kaziranga
Kaziranga National Park has been divided into 4 safari zones for an exotic wildlife experience. You may opt for an Open Jeep Safari or an Elephant Safari to check out the wildlife in Kaziranga. Due to a large population of rhinos, their sightings are quite frequent. If lucky, you might even see a tiger following his prey amid tall grasses or a herd of swamp deer bounding through the trees-the thrill is beyond words.
