Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong)
Rinpung Dzong, locally translated to fortress on a heap of jewels, was built in the mid-17th century and is one of the most captivating dzongs in Bhutan. A short wooden bridge that takes you to this fortress is a perfect place to click some Insta-worthy selfies. Built with stones & wood, and adorned with colorful murals & intricate panels, the dzong is a picture of beauty.
Kyichu Lhakhang
One of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country, Kyichu Lhakhang was purportedly built overnight on the left foot of a gigantic ogress who was believed to prevent the spread of Buddhism. The temple showcases exquisitely gilded doors, huge figurines of deities, and artistic traditions of the 7th century Bhutan.
Tiger's Nest Monastery
Perched primly on a high cliff, Tiger’s Nest Monastery, locally known as Taktsang Goemba, is the most famous monastery of Bhutan. An arduous climb of around 3000ft from the valley floor takes you to the monastery that offers breathtaking views of the valley sprawled at its feet.
Drukgeyl Dzong
Built-in 1649 to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders, this fortress was much destroyed in a fire in 1951. However, its magnificent ruins bear testimony to the glorious past of Bhutan.
Ta Dzong and National Museum
This circular watchtower was built-in1649 to protect the vulnerable Paro Dzong. It was later converted to a museum that preserves and showcases the rich history, culture & heritage of Bhutan through the numerous artifacts displayed here. The building is a perfect vantage point for the best sunset views in the city.
