Alluring Attractions of Sundarbans National Park
Topography & Vegetation
The national park is sprawled in an area of over 1400sqkm, all of it covered in thick jungles and ever-changing contours due to tidal waterways and silt deposits. The relief is dotted with tiny islands, series of mudflats, mangrove swamps, and an intricate network of ever-shifting tidal waterways. Its forests mainly include thick groves of Sundari trees, an endangered mangrove species, that lends its name to the park. Besides Sundari trees, the forest comprises of around 26 different species of mangroves.
Mammals and Other Species
Sunderbans National Park, a designated Tiger Reserve, is the haunt of the Royal Bengal Tigers. Around 180 magnificent tigers roam the dense jungles here. Besides the tigers, Sunderban National Park is also home to macaque, fishing cat, leopard cat, wild boar, Indian grey mongoose, flying fox, pangolin, chital, estuarine crocodiles, rare Ganges dolphins & endangered Olive Ridley turtles.
Birds of Sunderbans
The wetlands of Sunderbans with their distinct biodiversity have been declared a Ramsar Site, protected under the norms of the Ramsar Convention. The wetlands are home to around 286 bird species, including spotted dove, rose-ringed parakeet, kingfisher, partridge, heron, Caspian terns, seagull, plover, and pintails.
