Khajuraho Group of Monuments

Built somewhere between 950 AD and 1050 AD, by Chandela dynasty rulers, there were around 85 temples originally. However, only 25 temples survived the ravages of time & nature and looting & plundering by invaders. 
The beautiful temples of Khajuraho, etched with exemplary carvings of erotic symbolism, have captivated the world for decades. Built-in Nagara architectural style, these temples illustrate an array of figurines of celestial beauties, gods & goddesses, the nine planets, and various mythological figures. The temples have now been divided into different zones for categorization.

The Western Group of Temples

The most well-preserved and accessible only after paying an entry fee, the Western group of Temples has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located inside a rectangular complex, these temples are some of the most sensational temples in the world. Its highlights include Lakshaman Temple and Kendriya Mahadev Temple, the two biggest temples in Khajuraho, covered in carvings and sculptures of erotic symbolism.

The Eastern Group of Temples

The eastern group of temples is a delicate mix of both Hindu & Jain temples. The celestial beauties sculpted on Parasavnath temple, the ornamental depiction of dreams on the walls of Ghantai Temple, the four-faced image of Brahma in Brahma Temple, and the richly carved gateway of Javari Temple, are some of the beautiful features of eastern group of  temples.

Southern Group of Temples

This group of temples is comparatively smaller; its highlight being the spectacular Chaturbhuj Temple, the only temple in Khajuraho facing west. Dappled in orange hues, Chaturbhuj Temple is a gorgeous vision at sunset.

Each evening, the temples are illuminated along with a narration of the glorious history of the Chandela dynasty and Khajuraho. The show adds to the beauty and symbolism of the temples.
