Alluring Attractions of Ujjain
Let us take you on a journey retracing the footprints of Hindu mythology amid the many spectacular temples & ghats of Ujjain.
Sri Mahakaleshwar Temple
Home to one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas in Hindu mythology, this Shiva Temple, dedicated to his tantric form Mahakal, is one of the most sacred Hindu shrines. This Swayambhu or self manifesting Jyotirlang is believed to derive power from within, unlike the other lingams where power is vested through Vedic mantas and is smeared with ash from the cremation grounds. This huge temple complex includes around 100 smaller shrines devoted to various deities and a huge temple tank called Koti Teertham that is believed to contain celestial waters. The early morning ceremony at the temple is a heavenly experience.
Mata Harsiddhi Temple
This ancient temple, established by King Vikramaditya, is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas in India, celebrating a form of Goddess Durga. A vermillion statue of Mata Harsiddhi presides over the temple. The two 15ft high temple lamps depict the Maratha touch at the temple. These lamps, when lit during the Navratri festival in the temple, cast a divine radiance.
Ram Mandir Ghat
Dotted with many temples, this scared ghat (river steps) on the banks of River Kshipra is one of the four venues of Kumbh Mela, one of the most sacred religious & cultural congregations in the world. Experience the beautiful sunset at the ghat and revel in its serene spirituality.
Kaliadeh Palace
Built-in 1458, on an island in River Kshipra, Kaliadeh was once the royal seat of Mundu. It's a gorgeous river-setting, and spectacular Persian architecture makes it a must-visit attraction of Ujjain.
Jantar Mantar, Ujjain
This solar observatory, believed to be the oldest in India, was established in the 17th century by Raja Jai Singh II. Jantar Mantar is a stargazer's delight and a fine specimen of Indian scientific acumen in the 17thcentury.
