Meenakshi Amman Temple
Dominating the cityscape, the 14 tall & colorful Gopurams of Meenakshi Amman Temple, are the official icons of Madurai. The Gopurams, etched with three-dimensional-colorful-figurines of gods, goddesses, & mythical creatures, are a masterpiece of Dravidian temple art. The temple, sprawled in an area of over 14 acres, is a little city within itself. The temple has two sanctums, devoted to Lord Sundereswara, a form of Lord Shiva, and Goddess Meenakshi. Gracefully arched Mandapams, splendid pillared halls, and vividly painted walls & ceilings of the temple are a treat for your eyes. Swathed in mystical legends & fables, Meenakshi Amman Temple is the heart and soul of the city.
Temple Art Museum
Located in the Thousand Pillared Hall near the Eastern gateway of Meenakshi Amman Temple, this museum showcases brightly painted panels, a large bronze Nataraja figurine, and many more bronze figurines.
Tirumalai Nayak Palace
This 17th-century place of Nayak Kings is a fine specimen of Islamic-Dravidian architecture. Foliated brickwork, massive pillars, painted walls & ceilings, and grand gates are the highlights of the palace. Watch the evening light & sound show here to know more about this Nayak-era palace.
