Alluring Attractions of Mahabalipuram
Join us for a fascinating tour of this lost land dotted with ruins & relics that promise you an insight into the glorious history and brilliance of architecture of the bygone era.
Shore Temple
Legends assert that there were once seven such temples on the beach, lending it the sobriquet of the 'land of seven pagodas' amongst ancient mariners. Now, just one such complex stands, while the rest are believed to have been engulfed by the sea. Caressed by sea, wind, and time, this Dravidian style temple complex is home to three shrines- two of them devoted to Lord Shiva and one to Lord Vishnu. A spectacular row of Nandi guards the Shiva temples while the Vishnu shrine holds a gorgeous image of Lord Vishnu in repose. Resplendent with soaring towers, exquisite carvings, ancient inscriptions, and sculpted panels- this temple is the epitome of Indian temple architecture in the yesteryears.
Panch Rathas
These five rock-cut, chariot-like sculptures have been symbolically named after the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi of the Mahabharata fame. Artistic carvings, elaborate detailing, and exquisite finesse make these huge chariots an architectural wonder.
Arjuna’s Penance
A colossal bas relief structure, 100ft in length and around 45ft in height, is carved with exquisite figurines of men, animals, and Gods. Some interpret it as Arjuna’s Penance, where he is atoning to the Gods while others infer it as the ‘Descent of the Ganges’ where sage Bhagirath is entreating River Ganges to come down to the earth. Whatever the story may be, the sculpture is a work of art!
